Well, it's about damn time. AIDS and the Y2K bug are taking way too long.

Anyhow, a couple of comments. First, I have to chuckle when people say things like "there's a 1 in 500 quadrillion chance this thing will destroy the Earth". It's a good thing my residence never ratified Murphy's Law. I say, if some guy I've never heard of from some country I don't care about can win the Nobel Prize (or whatever other award I don't care about), then those are odds I can live with.

Secondly, all this talk about black holes, but ignoring that the LHC is supposed to re-create conditions that were present at the time of the universe? A 17km tube is supposed to contain the Big Bang?

And how can they have the probabilities of these things calculated so correctly, if they need this gizmo to understand more?

I volunteer to take the blame if we are swallowed up by a massive black hole born at the LHC. There, we're good to go :P

Because of how the Higgs boson functions. Quite simply, it must exist, or matter is random (which would make little to no sense)

Rather than create a black hole the odds are much better that they might discover a means of generating artificial gravity or even negating the effects of gravity on objects.

Our understanding of gravity is very limited. We know it exists and how it works when applied in general theory. Untill we can generate and manipulate gravity at will we will never fully grasp its intricicies.

The LHC sounds like an idea you come up with while drunk... let's create a device that can potentially destroy the world in order to try to research some obscure science that has no present real-world value.

Now if you wanted to build one of these on mars or a safe distance away from the earth, I'd be cool with it.

When it fires off. (if it ever does) It most likely will do nothing. It will make the particle and then all the people who say "it r make deth" will be proven wrong. Don't worry if we all die... we all loose the game

Rahja made me remember how rich quantum mechanics can be, and the differences between quantum physics and quantum chemistry.

If any of you are inclined, I highly recommend just taking a minute and looking at some of the quantum foundations. Admist all the weird and wacky symbols you'll find (to me at least) some of the most elegant and beautiful equations out there.

is it really loosing if thats the highest set standard you can reach?

or is it just settling for a smaller win?

bigger black holes are created by nature each day! come on, get some sense people..

it's not that hard to understarnd

this is done naturallly in the nature each day, what the humans are doinf is somewhat 5% of what is done in nature.

but those who think doomsday is upon us, live in fear, and the rest of us will live in bliss

edit: it's LOSE, NOT LOOSE! "i have loose pants" "we all lose" ok!?

I heard that it's the chemists who were complaining that this PHYSICS experiment was dangerous. What the hell do chemists know? When someone invents a cure for cancer, I don't think any physicists are going to start making some stupid crap up.

Besides, if the world was going to get sucked into a black hole, who cares, it's not like we do anything about it.

I hope they prove the Big Bang happened and religion gets shit on. That would make me happy.

Also, [email protected] who think the world will end.

My husband and I were joking about a black hole about the time that they started it up... and all of the sudden this really really deafening plane went roaring over our heads.
It gave me a few seconds of "oshi" before realising that it was just a plane.
